 12:06 AM - Old school

Spent the evening with my buddy Mike from grade school (that's right grade with an "e" on the end, my buddy Mike from grad school is deployed overseas). Mike from grade school was the best man at my wedding some nine years ago and we've more or less kept in touch, which is a bit surprisingly actually, as I would not have guessed that of the eight groomsmen he would be the one that I keep in touch with the most. Of course, it helps that we both still live in the same suburb in which we attended middle school. (That last statement is enough to send me on an downward spiral of morose introspection, but then again Immanuel Kant hardly ever left his sleepy little burough and he managed to muck up the entire field of academia for centuries on end.)

Naturally, introspection and philosophy were the topics de jure, as they usually are when me and Mike get together. That is, introspection, philosophy, and punk rock, as in "is it ethical to treat oneself as a means to an end and sell out one's art, mind, and soul in order to slake a manufactured desire for useless things?" My answer is a predictable, "'ell yeah" but my Chomskyite buddy for some bizzarre does not quite see it that way.
