Josh McDowell was remarkably candid in his comments to OBU Students earlier this week, reminding them to “remember that it’s relationships that engender beliefs that form values that drive behavior” and that “truth without relationships leads to rejection.” This is dangerously close to admitting that spiritual and moral beliefs are generally formed by social consensus rather than an appeal to logic and reason. Such an admission would explain why McDowell's efforts at “telling a doubting world about Christ” have been marketed and sold primarily to devout believers via Christian bookstores. It would also explain why people so rarely convert to different religions than those in which they were reared, even in open societies such as our own.
So much for apologetics.
